In July 2022, I was a prize-winner in the ‘Spirit’ Competition of the Commonwealth Community Music Initiative- it was very exciting to hear my piece performed in the People’s Orchestra's 'Curiosity Concert' during the Birmingham 2022 Festival, in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games. My short piece was specifically structured to allow it to be slotted into a sequence of contributions from different composers in a continuous passacaglia-like series of variations on a 16-bar bass-line, culminating in an arrangement of a famous theme by Holst.

The finale, 'Presto', movement of Fiona Frank's 'Lucchesi Concerto' was performed in Stroud on 9th December 2022.
Fiona wrote her concerto for Double Bass and orchestra in 2017, in response to a competitive call for scores for a work to be played as a mandatory set piece for participants in final public rounds of the Solo Double Bass Competition during BASS2018Lucca (Italy). Hence it acquired its title, 'Lucchesi Concerto'.

  • Fiona has always been drawn to the variety of colour available from a large orchestra, so this challenge suited her nicely, as it specified an extensive line-up of instruments. As an extra twist to the specification, the rules required some reference to be made to Francesco Geminiani who hailed from Lucca, and for this reason Fiona took as her inspiration Geminiani's Sonata Op5 no. 2. With two movements, an Andante and a Presto, in its brief span the work enjoyed both lyrical and more technically demanding passages for the soloist, while the extensive orchestration gave space for a broad palette of colours from the band and soloist. Double bass and big forces required some inventive juxtapositions and balancing in a contemporary interpretation for this call.

  • On meeting Dave Ayre, Fiona added a further movement to the concerto. However, the first performance was to be with his Baroque Band playing the final movement, so the big orchestral colour had to be re-framed for more limited forces with guitar, harpsichord and string quartet. This intimate baroque chamber grouping returned the Geminiani-inspired work closer to its origins and has resulted in a different, but no less musically successful, outcome. For its premiere, the finale, 'Presto', movement was performed in Stroud on 9th December 2022 to a hearty and enthusiastic audience.
